As we work to improve our neighborhood public schools, we also have to expand the educational choices available to children and families. Pennsylvania must make it easier for good public charter schools to expand in the state.
Charter schools are public schools, but they operate with more freedom than traditional schools and can serve as models of innovation. They also are open to kids throughout a district, so children stuck in underperforming neighborhood schools sometimes find charters to be a life-saving alternative.
