Gov. Corbett gives commencement to first Boys Latin graduating class.

Gov. Corbett and Mayor Nutter headline Boys Latin Charter School first graduation in West Philadelphia this past Monday.

“In many ways you – the first graduating class – are the founders of your school,” Corbett told the 79 young men who received their diplomas before a cheering audience of parents, friends, and supporters who packed the Zellerbach Auditorium at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Center for an emotion-laden, high-spirited commencement ceremony Monday.

Not all the graduates were able to be there for the momentous day with Governor and the Mayor. One of the graduates, Foday Gibateh, is a Boys’ Latin Charter School senior paralyzed in a car accident in February and held a private ceremony from his rehabilitation bed. As the first class to graduate from Boys Latin, the class of 2011 is setting the bar high. 96% of their class is going on to a four year college.
