“The Whole Gritty City”
February 12, 2014
To: PCPCS member charter schools,
The following letter came to me by way of my daughter whose friend teaches in New Orleans. The link is to a program that will appear this Saturday on CBS that may be of interest to you as educators. It’s not about Pennsylvania kids, but children everywhere face the same challenges and have the same potential for success.
I hope this finds you well. I’ve often had trouble explaining my draw to New Orleans, my time in schools here, and how amazing the students I work with are.
This Saturday, CBS is airing “The Whole Gritty City,” a documentary that shows how music is saving the lives of children in New Orleans. It tells the story of three local marching bands, one being O. Perry Walker. It was filmed during the time that I worked there. I marched in these parades with the school and film crew; these are my students, co-workers, and friends; and I am immensely proud of how they represent and how resilient they are.
I’ve only watched the trailer – http://thewholegrittycity.com – but I hope this documentary does right by this city and our kids. If you’re able to, check it out. This Saturday night, CBS, 9pm EST.
