How To Open a New School
Congratulations on your interest in founding a charter school in Pennsylvania!
With 179 charter schools operating in Pennsylvania, you are in good company.
In general, in Pennsylvania, there are two types of charter Schools: Cyber Charters schools, whose students participate in classes, mostly, online; and more traditional (“bricks and mortar”) schools.
Under current law, Cyber schools receive their Charters from the PA Department of Education. “Bricks & Mortar” schools receive their Charters from the local school district where the new school would be located. While state law sets the standards, each local district’s process is slightly different.
PCPCS has a “Start-Up Support” Committee of Charter School executives and business leaders who can help offer you support during this process. Additionally, our Counsel can assist you with an overview of the process.
