Governor Wolf and his allies in Harrisburg would like nothing more than to strip families of their right to choose a public charter school for their children.[/vc_cta][vc_column_text]As most of you are aware, the Governor announced a series of proposed charter school “reforms” in the past couple of weeks. This is the start of what will likely be a year-long tussle over charter policy and legislation. While he dressed up his presentation with reasonable-sounding proposals for “ethics” and “transparency” (many of which are already included in law), the core of what the Governor aims to do is claw money back from charter schools. In other words, take it away and give it “back” to districts.

Charter students and their families make a choice to enroll in a school that gets less resources but in many cases is able to do more because of less red tape and more community participation. Governor Wolf says he wants to level the playing field. But it’s already unequal, and his proposals would make it even more unfair.

PCPCS certainly believes that charter schools are a positive option for many families. We understand that for many others they may be perfectly satisfied with their neighborhood school. The bottom line is simple: it should be up to the parents, who know their children best, to decide where their child attends school, and these parents deserve to have charter schools as an option.
