The statewide coalition to rally at the capitol in honor of National Charter Schools Week

HARRISBURG (May 11, 2022) –  The Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools (PCPCS), the statewide coalition and the voice for the 170,000 public charter school students and communities across the Keystone State, will host a rally on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at 11 AM on the front steps of the Harrisburg Capitol (at the intersection of State Street and N. 3rd Street) in honor of National Charter Schools Week.

National Charter Schools Week is a yearly national week where public charter schools across the country celebrate students, teachers, leaders, families, advocates, and supporters.  The national week takes place this year, May 8 – 14, 2022.  The theme this year is “Charter Schools Rising”, with demand for these schools at record highs.  

For 2020 – 2021, PA cyber and brick and mortar charter school enrollment grew by 22,696 students or 15.49%.  Parents voted with their feet and chose public charter schools for their children.  PA has over 170 charter schools and close to 170,000 students.  At the national level, there are more than 7,700 charter schools across the country with more than 3.4 million students.

Unfortunately, public charter schools in our Commonwealth are under attack by anti-charter regulations and horrendous proposed cuts (both at the state and national levels).  What these attacks fail to acknowledge is that public charter schools bring choice, accountability, innovation, and freedom as well as quality education, focus on students, and safer and stronger communities.

PCPCS stands ready to continue to support, fight for, and be the voice of the public charter students and schools across the State of Pennsylvania.
